A Touching Series of Surprises on My Birthday
February 7th – 7:30 AM
That morning, I joined a fellow student teacher to serve as a judge for a 9th-grade performance class. It was my first close interaction with this group of students. Upon entering the classroom, I immediately noticed their bright, cheerful expressions. There was a clear sense of eagerness in the room, as though they had something special in mind. I took a seat at the back with other student teachers and began evaluating the group performances.
Once the session concluded, the students unexpectedly gathered around me. They invited me for photos and engaged me in friendly conversation. One student asked how old I was, to which I replied, “I’m 20, and tomorrow I’ll be 21.” The moment they heard this, they spontaneously erupted into a lively rendition of the “Happy Birthday” song. They varied the tempo at times slow and melodic, then suddenly upbeat and energetic. Their sincerity moved me deeply. I received warm hugs from many students, along with heartfelt birthday wishes from my fellow student teachers. I returned to our cottage feeling joyful, albeit slightly shy.

February 8th – A Truly Special Day
Amidst the joy, however, was a sense of sadness. That day marked the departure of a close friend who had supported me and my group throughout the program. He was leaving for Vietnam for his own teaching practicum. It was a bittersweet farewell.
Later that evening, yet another surprise awaited me. One of my buddies and his friend visited and prepared my favorite dish, Garlic Butter Shrimp. This was their second time cooking for us, and the dish was exceptional. The aroma was rich and inviting, and the blend of garlic, butter, spice, and saltiness created a flavor that was both comforting and satisfying.
On that day, I felt truly grateful. The kindness and thoughtfulness extended to me by so many people were a powerful reminder of the warmth and beauty of human connection, especially in a place far from home.
